This family room is in a house situated on the grounds of the Cranbrook Educational Community. Added to the original Albert Kahn designed home in the early 1960’s, the family room’s interior reflects the style of that time period. A wall of windows brings in a sweeping view of the wooded property while a floor to ceiling sandstone fireplace forms the focal point for the room’s interior.
Original oak parquet floors were restored to a warm, golden color. Walls were painted to flatter the terra cotta and sand tones of the fireplace. Furniture is grouped to form different conversation areas, a music area and an area for informal dining. Hand knotted Tibetan rugs help define the conversation areas while bringing in rich, dramatic color. A walnut baby grand piano anchors one end of the room. In the style of Ray Eames, handcrafted artifacts and textiles from around the world give unique texture and interest.
Upholstered furnishings were selected to be comfortable and stylish. Special accent pieces designed by distinguished designers such as Florence Knoll, Ray and Charles Eames pay tribute to the Cranbrook community. Pieces by other prominent designers of the contemporary classics movement such as Mies Van Der Rohe and Warren Platner are also in keeping with the architectural style of the room.
